a smile lead to a conversation and once again destiny would wave its hand, with in a few days that fateful incounter would alter the creative journey of the three.
as Otis entered Joseph and Brian’s life he would quickly inspire them and encourage them to begin the one piece that frightened them their masterpiece.
Now David would enspire them to to take the next step in the trilogy…
A life time may pass waiting for the insperation the moment an artwork demands life, this would be such a moment…the emotion and trust bound by stone, love and hope embodied by an image, created by man envisioned in the mind and given life for eternity by the hands.
“The Awakening of the David” Unveiled at historic Pier 21 Canada’s Ellis Island July 16th, 2008
The stone has asked to speak….
In 1464 Agostino di Duccio was contracted to create a sculpture the legs feet and a roughly draped chest were designed when Donatello his mentor died in 1466 the work ended and Antonio Rossellino took over the sculpture. the sculpture was never completed and the gaint block of Carrara marble sat abandoned for the next quarter centery after 25 years the stone once again called to be brought to life Leonardo da Vinci was even consulted but fate would finnally intervine and on August 16,1501 Michelangelo would undertake the task of giving the marble life. Work began on september 13,1501 and was completed in january 1504. the david is concidered one of the finest examples of the male form and sculpture is concidered the purest form of art because it mimics divine creation. Michelangelo believed the image existed with in the stone and he was to find it’s soul and bring it out. There immediately was controversy over the statue’s Biblical reference, the statue portrayed an uncircumcised male, whereas the King David was undoubtedly circumcised. Because of this, art historians believed that “David” is actually the name of the ‘model’ who posed for the statue, rather than King David himself, and that Michelangelo claimed the Biblical reference to make it acceptable to the Christian world. It was also suggested that this was a conscious decision in Michelangelo’s endeavor to emulate the ancient Greek aesthetic ideals. 500 years have past and sculptors Joseph Landry & Brian Gazeley have taken the task of giving life to the inanimate with the insperation of “Otis” they embarked on the quest of sculptors before them to create an image of man that will mimic creation and inspire generations to come to take up the task of giving life to a creation of the hands. Michelangelo left us guessing as to his insperation Landry and Gazeley leave no questions as they take us through the creative process first was the Otis their masterpiece in the style of David.now the hands speak again a represntaion of love through their hands the creation of three realized in one image, three intrewined forever as a tribute to the power of love and dreams.this is their gift to the ages. This masterpiece is the second in a trilogy of masterpieces the “David “
